ICE Out of Fremont!
WE NEED YOU to SHOW UP!!
This Tuesday, May 5th, the Fremont City Council will vote to start the process of making
Fremont an ICE-free Zone.
Making Fremont an ICE-free zone would forbid federal immigration enforcement from using city property: this means federal immigration enforcement would not be able to stage, park vehicles, etc. Fremont is already a sanctuary city – meaning many City of Fremont employees, such as the police, do not work with ICE. However, ICE and other federal immigration enforcement can still show up in Fremont, like they did in the Sundale neighborhood back in November 2025. They are not currently banned from using city property. If we ban federal immigration enforcement from using city property, it will be harder for them to harass and terrorize our neighbors.
On May 5th, City Council is considering an item to start the process of making Fremont an ICE-free Zone. The City staff would return to Council in 30-days to present legal language that would make Fremont an ICE-free Zone. We are hoping for the Council to pass this first item on May 5th to begin the process, and then for Council to pass the second item when it returns to the body to complete the process and have Fremont as an ICE-free Zone.
Have other places done this? Yes! Other jurisdictions in our area including Alameda County, Santa Clara County, Oakland, Pinole, San Jose, and Santa Rosa have passed similar ICE Free Zone laws. Fremont is the largest Bay Area city that doesn’t have an ICE Free Zone law!
What can you do? Show up and let the City Council know that we want Fremont to be an ICE-free zone! You can send an email to your Councilmember in support of this, and/or you can speak up during the public comment period at the meeting this Tuesday (5/5).
